"Duties are not performed for duty's sake,
but because their neglect would make the man uncomfortable.
A man performs but one duty --
the duty of contenting his spirit,
the duty of making himself agreeable to himself."

Reader comments about this quote:
Can be, not necessarily. When my children were small, duties were performed from love, joy and wanting to. Even the middle of the night / early morning was joyfully agreeable to me. So, by personal experience, I recognize the trait but, it is not universal.
