"The newspaper is of necessity something of a monopoly, and its first duty is to shun the temptations of monopoly. Its primary office is the gathering of news. At the peril of its soul it must see that the supply is not tainted. Neither in what it gives, nor in what it does not give, nor in the mode of presentation, must the unclouded face of truth suffer wrong. Comment is free but facts are sacred."

Reader comments about this quote:
Time, integrity, dangers inherent to exposing truth, political / religious prejudice, and money may be the largest and primary limiters on there being more investigative news sources and expositors. In the statist theocracy that now infests this land, the newspaper (entire media complex) has been reduced to the propaganda forth branch of government. News comments are freely prejudicial and misleading while facts are selective and skewed.

I no longer subscribe to any newspaper, nor will I buy one. As Mike said there's nothing but propoganda to be found there. I've had all the "spin" I need for one life time.

Luckily there are still a few news outlets that understand this and that separate their editorial commentary from their news reporting role. Sadly, too many "news" organizations have lost touch with this and are highly biased multi-media monopolies run by world wide "anything for a profit" robber barons. Pathetically, too few understand the difference and buy these "news" sources as "fair" and "balanced".

Most "newspapers" today are merely propaganda outlets for the libs in Washington. The same goes for CNN,CBS, MSNBC,and ABC.

Sad we are so far from this ethic - will we ever return to a day when we can comfortably say 'yes, this is what we have'. I believe to do so will the Dems and start all over again from a clean slate - OK, with a little bit of blood on it!

Comments and facts yeah reminds me of Obama's retort to a congressman at last weeks Republican House Conference. He said, "Your comments may make for good politics but they are simply wrong." Oh if we only had more facts and less comments and politics, more sacredness and less BS.

An utopy we'll never have. Human mind alone provides enough damming biases, not mentioning all other politics&money shenanigans.
