"In my youth, I stressed freedom,
and in my old age I stress order.
I have made the great discovery
that liberty is a product of order."

Reader comments about this quote:
I'm old enough to have discovered the wisdom in Durant's words here. The older we get the more most of us accumulate, which steals our time. We become slaves to our possessions, as everything has to be one or more of the following: brought home, opened, closed, unpacked, put together, taken apart, washed, dried, read, used, brought out, put away, moved from one place to another, stored, given away or taken out to the trash! So many of us have way too much to keep in order, which results in a great loss of liberty.

Durant saw the correlation, but reversed cause and effect. Real, lasting, and beneficial order is the product of liberty.
