"Nonviolence is not a garment
to be put on and off at will.
Its seat is in the heart, and
it must be an inseparable part
of our very being."

The guy was great, I am trying to square his philosophy with the history of war and where we would be without war. As in 1776, 1860, 1941 etcetera.

Gandhi did not believe in the disarmament of the People. A distinction should be made between 'war' and 'defense'. All of us have a right to defend ourselves by any means necessary -- however, we have no right to wage war upon another. Non-violent non-cooperation with evil is the most powerful force because it starves the armed oppressor without the use of arms. Brilliant.

True but violence can never be ruled out as a sometimes necessary solution or you will find it forced on you anyway.
