Considering the source of the statement, on the surface it seems to be of a truth. But not altogether true. Calvinism of the north differs greatly with that of the south and its break away and stance more in line with Martin Luther.
Sola Fide. ( Romans 4:5 ) When men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins. Is the true stance of being at Liberty. Freedom from oppression, that no church or state has a right to impose upon another any form of tyranny. Ward spoke against slavery but supported socialism of the north. As he promoted the chains of socialism within the Calvinistic denomination.

    A TRUE paraphrase:

Make a nation large and strong and tyranny will bankrupt itself making shackles for its own assets

A great truth for today as the democratic mob tries to suppress the original intent of our founding fathers. I expect Rev. Beecher's placed too much faith in men, as I did in the past but now I know that true strength and wisdom only come from our heavenly father. I would substitute faith and character for large and strong!
