'A symptom of grave illness' indeed. Today, people dare not dissent against the hegemonic and authoritarian policies of the government of the last decade. The writ of habeas corpus is no longer a right, for example, and anyone can be detained indefinitely without charge, without counsel, without a hearing, without anything! Criticize Bush and you can find yourself in an FBI interrogation room. Our cowardice and ignorance are the first obstacles to overcome if we are ever to get this free republic back on track.
