Schooling is simply the creation of awareness that knowledge exists. Going for the knowledge is a personal decision and effort. If one does not know that knowledge exists he can not go for it. -- Waffler, Smith, Arkansas
According to the Waffler gibberish above, it should be the school's business to teach kids how to think, to maybe learn a little math and English along the way, and perhaps even to learn to read and write. Many graduating high schoolers can't even write a simple declarative sentence or finish a sentence while speaking without saying "like" about 50 times. Our public indoctrination centers, known as public schools, are a disaster. -- jim k, austin
It is a classic. ;-) Waffler doesn't even believe himself. He wants to agree with the quote, so he has to twist some convoluted meaning out of it to support his contrary view (which is that we wouldn't even know knowledge existed if it weren't for our schooling... ?!). Now, this is a shame -- this is exactly what a public education will do to you -- it may in fact be irreversible. And THAT is why public education should be taken out of the hands of welfare statists. -- E Archer, NYC
I know I am doing great because my handle is listed in so many responses. Why don't you guys with no thoughts of your own go back to staring at the back of the cave wall where you obviously spend the bulk of your time before you sign on here. As is typical of Waffler, he uses someone else's words as the authority when telling others to think for themselves. ;-) Kandel's quote is just another version of globalist jargon (typical of the Carnegie Foundation to which he belonged). Without defining 'economic development' or even 'worldwide recognition'. this quote is just dribble from the makers of the New World Order. Such globalists believe that the world needs to be guided and molded to prepare us for THEIR world, whereas lovers of liberty and self-reliance have ideas of their own for their own lives -- and that just flies in the face of those who have worked long and hard to make me do what they want me to do. The reason Waffler's leftist opinions are so often referred to in other's posts is because of his pompous ignorance and arrogance -- he obviously considers himself some sort of missionary trying to save us when in fact it is he that is bound and tied to a comfortable delusion. Archer do really believe that children know about astronomy, physics, blah blah blah. An education should allow persons to explore knowledge. Now you Pol Pot, and I guess Jim from Austin just wants education to give kids a job, like flipping burgers so they can eat, shelter themeselves and raise more burger flippers. I like giving people the opportunity to create a life of meaning and purpose for themselves. As usual, Waffler equates learning with schooling -- even when commenting about a quote making the distinction. Yes, children who use their own telescopes know about astronomy -- probably more than what is taught in public school. Yes, children who have encyclopedias or belong to book-of-the-month clubs probably have more knowledge than those attending public school. Yes, native Americans knew more than their colonial counterparts about farming, hunting, the watershed, and respect for the land -- the League of Iroquois was a model for the new republican government formed by the colonists. It is pubic school that prepares kids for flipping burgers, not the drive of the individual (unless of course the individual is Ray Croc -- what's wrong with producing something real?). I have had the honor of living in the bush with those that can read every leaf and bug, who have a wealth of knowledge about healing and balance with nature.
