The Federal Reserve runs the country, so the government is obligated to save financial institutions. With every 'crunch' (we don't call them 'crashes' any more), the financial community becomes more and more centralized under the thumb of the Fed. Let these companies go bankrupt as they are supposed to. People have to learn from their mistakes. When you play with Monopoly money, it all goes back in the box eventually. And as far as the government being in the insurance business, wake up, 99% of our legal statutes are based upon insurance (otherwise known as 'securities').
