"There exists a law, not written down anywhere, but inborn in our hearts, a law which comes to us not by training or custom or reading, a law which has come to us not from theory but from practice, not by instruction but by natural intuition. I refer to the law which lays down that, if our lives are endangered by plots or violence or armed robbers or enemies, any and every method of protecting ourselves is morally right."

This is the basis of a republican form of government, as well as Common Law itself. It is morally right to defend yourself, even if you follow the 'wrong' religion, eat the 'wrong' foods, take the wrong medicines, wear funny hats, grow your own food, gather your own water, build your own house, and on and on. The individual right is the basis of the representative government made up of fellow citizens who have no more rights than those they represent and can perform no act that would be criminal for the average citizen to do. Thus the right to self-defense -- particularly against criminal acts of the government -- is always a fundamental right, if not a critical duty.
