"It was just one year ago that the world saw this new, invigorated United Nations in action as this Council stood fast against aggression and stood for the sacred principles enshrined in the U.N. Charter. And now it's time to step forward again, make the internal reforms, accelerate the revitalization, accept the responsibilities necessary for a vigorous and effective United Nations. I want to assure the members of this Council and the Secretary-General, the United Nations can count on our full support in this task."

This is the actual quote from the Jan 31/92 UN speech. The quote frequently appears 'paraphrased' -- we have the false quote here.

A United Nations Peace Keeping Force is a fantastic idea, unfortunately it's way ahead of its time - we are still animals and as such will be treated so. We are not ready for enlightenment - only anger and revenge seems to motivate us. Our rhetoric show quite simply that we have a long road ahead of us - if the human race survives I see hope, but we have not reached that tipping point yet...

Robert has it right. Until---or I should say only if---we can have a truly United Nations' police force and court of justice will we ever have peace and justice. And I believe we will have destroyed our civilization before we ever reach this stage of enlightenment.

I would that there be no U.N. at all - its goal is not world peace, but world domination... No organization could simply come into existence and then expect all the nations of the world to instantly give up their national sovereignty to it - these things take time... America is the greatest nation in the world because of the virtues (define them as you will), principles, and the capitalist foundations that it's built on - She has, however, largely turned from these principles and foundations and has given us a mixed society of democracy, socialism, and internationalism. To hell with the U.N. - Nothing in any U.N. charter secure to man or women any unalienable rights - I was not born into this life being given my 'rights' and 'privileges' from government - national or international; I assumed these rights of myself and to myself independent of any civil government. World peace DOES sound good - but it cannot be compelled! Compulsion and coercion are the pillars of anarchy and tyranny - and that's just what the U.N. seeks to establish... give up the last of my freedoms in MY OWN country to be a lackey of the international mafia? No thanks!

Despite the ratification of the universal Declaration of Human Rights, the UN is as corrupt as any governing body, and does not seem about to do that for which it was created, but instead seems to promote the opposite. The UN is worse than useless.

I agree with Robert & Dick -- it would be nice if we lived in a world like that. But for the very reason we cannot trust our own government (or the neighbors on the 'wrong side of the tracks'), we cannot trust a foreign government either. It is best that we remember that the world is NOT an enlightened people -- if all men were angels there would be no need of government. It is because humankind is not just kind but cruel, not just capable but powerful, not just happy but insatiable. We are oppressive, hypocritical, lie, take from others, often lashing out at those we don't like. And even despite all this, we still want freedom -- we still would prefer to be free in the midst of danger from our fellows, than to be captive of another man for 'our own protection'. And if a free people are willing to better themselves for their own good and the good of the community of their own free will, the free Republic will finally have a chance to reach its ideal. In the mean time, we have to hold each other accountable for our actions. The primary difference between the American Constitution and the UN Constitution is this: The US Constitution is the rule book for the government as set forth by the People -- it declares the rights of the people as inherent and from those powers we form our government. The UN Constitution is declared by the government to the people, thus telling them what their rights are as declared by the UN -- it is completely backwards. Very Big Difference -- whatever 'rights' the UN gives, can be taken away.

How stupid can the world's people be? Why do we continue to create these 'seats of power' for despots to cheat their way into? Why do we clamour for a king or council to save us? Why do we keep giving away our power in hopes that a beneficent board of directors will solve our problems?

I wonder where the UN is when travesties like those around Darfur are permitted to continue without an effective intervention. Darfur is only the latest of an ignominious string of situations in which the UN, as it has stood to date, and is most likely to stand in perpetuity, has proven itself feckless. We need to come to grips with the fact that human nature is human nature and that it is fundamental, instinctual, and animal in the nature of its urges. While we are human there will be no solution to issues of this sort, save perhaps, an acceptance and alertness to what the facts are, accompanied by commensurate action - each individual or group in his, her, or its own capacity. There will always be avarice, cowardice, greed, generosity, altruism, charity, and all of the other human qualities which have always attended the human condition - else Shakespeare and most other classics would become moot and passé. I don't pretend familiarity with the inner workings of the UN but I CAN see some of the results of its functioning. All too often these results appear ineffectual and late or nonexistent. Sometimes the results seem to be a result of corruption. This is not a permanently 'solvable' state of affairs given human nature as would be the case if humans were mechanical devices - and even they need periodic 'maintenance'. It's a state of affairs which warrants alertness. Our 'liberty' has NOT 'been won'. Our liberty requires daily winning. It's like brushing your teeth - you don't just say "Well, THAT'S done once and for all."

I'm sure a UN international tax, a standing UN army, another UN council or commitee, a disarmed population, and all will be peace and harmony in the world. Until those commitees, councils, and armies under the control of dictators and various member despots of the UN come to march all of us troublemakers off to the gas chambers.

O dear. O dear, O dear, we are still blind and as such will follow each over into abyss - when will we stop thinking like this? when will we start thinking of ourselves (the human race) as all belonging to the same family. I am very sorry for those those whose death song shall be the rhetoric I see above. When will compassion for all peoples begin? America is not a democracy and has never been. Our electoral system is one party dominant system and until that is changed we are on the road to implosion. We need to discuss electoral reform and get our own house in order before we criticize other counties – we are not so pure; in the 535 members of the United States Congress in the last 12 months 36 have abuse their wives, 7 have been arrested for fraud, 117 directly or indirectly bankrupt at least 2 companies, 71 cannot get credit card due to bad credit, 14 have been arrested on drug-related charges, 8 for shoplifting, and 84 have been arrested for drunk driving – the list goes on… As told by a Jewish person in Germany – "I stood by and watch them come for all my non-Jewish fiends and did nothing, and then one day they came for me."
     -- Robert, Sarasota

Robert, the 'story' was 'told' (it's a metaphor as far as I can determine) by a non-Jewish person in Germany: 'They came for the Jews. But I was not a Jew, so I said nothing... Then They came for the Communists and the Dissidents. but, I was not a Communist or a Dissident, so I said nothing... Then They came for the Labor Unionists. but, I was not a unionist, so I said nothing . . . Then, one day, They came for me. No one said a word against Them. and it was too late, because no one said anything...' -- There's more than rhetoric to observation.

I understand from another thread that there is no UN Constitution. OK, then, good -- that's what I am talking about. Let's make sure there never is one -- we've got a Constitution, if politicians act outside of their authority now, how will a UN Charter be any different? Let the world copy our system, we don't have to adopt theirs.

I guess Hitler was a man ahead of his times. He wanted a third reich that would rule the world for a thousand years. And if you believed everything he told you about it, it would be the best thing that ever happened to humanity. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. We need more localized government, not politicians frojm halfway around the world deciding what is best for us. I can't believe there are people naive enough to think that giving world domination to a group of politicians could end anyway but VERY, VERY, badly for 90% of us.
