He's the one that got us into this mess in the first place - another pawn of the elite like Obama. There are to many lies and blunders to list and suffice to say he was the most unpopular president even coming in under Jimmy Carter. Just to name a few of his real big gaffs: Trees cause more pollution than automobiles do; St Helens produce more sulpher dioxide than cars did over a 10 year period; and, then praised P.W. Botha’s apartheid regime for eliminating segregation - the list goes on, and on. Most of his quotes were for the press and were written mostly by speech writers. He will probably go down in history as the worst President, but Bush and Obama may just pip him to the post. -- RBESRQ 1 1

Unfortunately, we, the people, got the rhetoric and the thugs that put him in office (and surrounded him while in office) got the action. Robert, I have to agree with a lot of what you've said here. Reagan had excellent sound bites. This one I don't believe was one of his better ones. It's likely the first penny of tax paid was extorted under duress and did not make him a share holder but rather, a slave. The individual was/is already sovereign with his representatives being HIS mere servants. -- Mike, Norwalk 3

Regan’s here statement more closely associates with a system of Joint Tenancy and reduces individual sovereignty to a commercial venture. The de jure body politic of individual sovereigns uniting would more closely associate (but just barely) to tenants in common. The body politic in the de jure States united is/are servants fulfilling certain job descriptions by protecting and enhancing each and every, any and all individual inalienable rights (NOTHING ELSE ! ! !) Statism is NOT republicanism! I am not a shareholder of the US govt, nor do I want to be. Reagan was a puppet, I liked his speeches, but he was obviously unable to change anything. He cancelled a slew of executive orders of Carter's when in office, but he was unable to make the changes in the federal government that would have downsized DC and returned responsibility to the States. The assassination attempt seemed to have the desired effect. But there has not been a president yet that hasn't doubled the debt during his term... the Clinton 'surplus' was an accounting trick -- there is no surplus, they just borrowed more than they spent -- they did not give that money back, they just spent it. -- E Archer, NYC
