The overall sentiment is absolutely accurate. The whole of the issue is inalienable right(s) as a faculty of birth. To feed one's self, family, etc. as a matter of survival is a right. To support liberty at "the laws of nature and of nature's God - individually or in concert with others (protect against governmental tyranny — all enemies, foreign and domestic) is a right. Property ownership (whether that property is real, personal or otherwise) is a right. The right to keep and bear arms is more than an auxiliary right or an accommodation of need, it is an inalienable extension of self.

An armed citizenry is the check against government power.  The power of arms rest with the People first, they charter a government to protect their rights from violation, particularly by government officers and employees.  No one can be trusted with absolute power, that is why power remains distributed and not to be centralized.
