Reader comments about this quote:
I listened to stories of the great depression from old people when I was just young. They would smile with pride when they talked of honesty, integrity and helping one another even when there wasn't enough to eat. The substance of the statement fits died in the wool socialists.

Mike, look at the photos of folks standing single file and orderly in the big city soup lines then. They even wore their best clothes. Imagine the fighting and line cutting today. It was a different kind of people back then.

Walking the dusty roads leaving the city, children in tow. Knocking at the doors of farms, asking to trade for food, with what ever of value they had, don't you know. Staples bought with what little cash, my Grandpa made that month. Live off what you earn, don't try to make a living, were his words of wisdom. As the hands on the farm jump the fence, to take a few apples for the day. The smokehouse was always full, where my Mother and Aunt would steal away. Sharing what they had from the old farm where the children were still found to play.

My Dad ( May he be with God) was born in 1921, lost his father when he was 7 Yrs. old. He often told us kids about the "great Depression" the soup lines, "Pipe City" by the Oakland, CA. estuary, how he would get up at 0 dark thirty to meet the ferry at the pier and pick up newspapers to sell for the day, so he could do his share for the family. Now that I think about it I don't recall him ever crying about how unfair it was.
