"Perhaps Communists had wormed their way so deeply into our government on both the working and planning levels that they were able to exercise an inordinate degree of power in shaping the course of America in the dangerous postwar era. I could not help wondering and worrying whether we were faced with open enemies across the conference table and hidden enemies who sat with us in our most secret councils."

Reader comments about this quote:
Clark was almost as stupid about communists in 1962 as he was in landing troops to be slaughtered on the west coast of Italy in 1943. Senator McCarthy's similar accusations about communists in the government had been disproven by the congress and President Eisenhower.

A lot of perhaps and wondering. Robert, more Hollywood and academia left wing rhetoric was brought to bear than any proof was offered.

They're not called Communists anymore, they're called Globalists. And they are as real as a heart attack. National Soveriegnty is pretty much an obsolete notion...unless there is a reenactment of 1776 and pretty damned quick!

Once the UN entered the scene, the communists were given legitamacy and access to US military information. But of course it is politically incorrect to bash the UN, right? Afterall, their stated purpose is to be the world's peacekeepers -- with a Russian as permanent head of UN military forces. The UN is a spy's heaven and a constant threat to American liberty and strength. And for those espousing democracy, I put to you that this 'world government' is not democratically elected and it assumes superiority over the US. In truth, the UN is a central bankers ploy -- the only countries in it are de facto bankrupt and using fiat currencies owned by the private banksters that indeed rule/own the world.

Robert, Houston......."We can't expect the American People to jump from Capitalism to Communism, but we can assist their elected leaders in giving them small doses of Socialism, until they awaken one day to find that they have Communism." Nikita Krushchev. When are you going to wake up?

To name two Reds ,Edward Mandell House ,close advisor to Woodrow Wilson, and Harry Dexter White, close advisor to Franklin Roosevelt. A few more would be everyone Obama has appointed to his cabinet plus The Botox Queen, Nancy Pelosi.

Robert, Houston-my dad jumped with the 82nd airborne in Italy under Clark and he has nothing good to say about him as you, but the communist cycle is called socialism now and we need to beware.

The expression of scoundrels and frauds; here Clark inflames the unthinking by using words like PERHAPS. Well how about "perhaps not" General Clark. You guys love a witch hunt. I know what side you all would have been on in Salem, Mass. Hang 'em all would have been your cry. You have no discernment whatsoever!

Waffler, as to discernment, it's about time people stopped looking in the "perhaps not" direction. It does my heart good to see it. It's obvious you would prefer those that are "unthinking" to stay that way which is the way they have been lulled to sleep over these last hundred years as the bankers plans come to fruition. What's wrong with the "unthinkers" given some stimulus to get them thinking again?

Always there has been some terrible evil at home or some monstrous foreign power that was going to gobble us up if we did not blindly rally behind it.~ Douglas MacArthur.- Another Scoundrel? I don't think so...we are deliberately kept in fear so we'll all run to mommy...

Anon if you said that "perhaps your neighbor is a communist" do you think people would be more critical of your neighfor or of you. I for one would be critical of you. Mark Clark may have just been ruminating or thinking out loud, but we should hush our mouth rather than fomenting uncalled for hatred and paranoia. This is McCarthyism pure and simple. I repeat they are the words of scoundrels.

Waffler, I wouldn't, as I haven't in the past nor will in the future, cared about what people think of me or my neighbor until both sides of the story are heard. Trouble begins when only one side of the story is given an ear while the other is buried because it is branded McCarthyism pure and simple and on that ground alone, anything after that deserves NO attention. Lo and behold the result is exactly what the neo communofascist promoter desires, a taboo word that almost automatically throws doubt on any who has another side of the story that just MIGHT make people think for themselves. Of course we all know that you and your one world heroes and man gods prefer the type that doesn't think for themselves therefore why the huge effort by the main stream media to keep the other side of the story from being heard by too many? Even you yourself would would ban ANY other view than your McCarthyist one once the word is used. Your only fooling yourself if you think there was any nobility to that post of yours I am responding to. You haven't fooled me.

Perhaps you are fooled Anon. You still don;t get it, the offending word is PERHAPS. It makes the quote meaningless. If a jury sent a man to the chair or gallows because PERHAPS he did it, does that make it clear to you, can you dig it man, can you dig it. You have given me no reason to believe that you can. And that is sad very sad.

Well gee waffler, what do you call it when government takes over business and becomes a profit partner within say, the banking industry? How about the auto industry? Wow, the health industry is next. What type of government do these actions create? Pity me if you wish as I've already said it doesn't matter what anybody thinks of me. It is only BOTH sides of the story that really counts because only then can truth be discerned. Of course you can continue your semantic word game over the word "perhaps" which is, as always, your choice.

McCarthy may have been a drunkard and a bully, but he has been proven right about the Communists in the government. There's nothing wrong with Communists and Marxists except that they are an anathma to Democracy and the Constitution and the (true) American way of life.

This quoter was just your typical mentally ill individual who lived in the world of make believe, making up scenarios and performing entities of the insignificant or the unrealistic. The conventional members adore the efforts of members like this. He was a high ranking member in your much adored military machine. Now, an individual with really good reality based ideas, is harassed, harangued, and much effort is expended to discredit the creditable leadership we could really benefit from with an individual with mental health.
