"There are contingency plans in the NATO doctrine to fire a nuclear
weapon for demonstrative purposes, to demonstrate to the other side that
they are exceeding the limits of toleration in the conventional area."
Alexander Haig
(1924- ) Secretary of State for President Ronald Reagan
Testimony, Congressional Hearings on NATO, 1983. Cited in Dugger, On Reagan, p. 403

Nuke 'em if ya got 'em.

lol JT, I like it, sorta nuke um all, let god sort em out. The quote demonstrates a real scary scenario when the war monger holding the button has no moral foundation or understanding of the nobility of life.
     -- Mike, Norwalk
This example of unprincipled superiority and bullying is too much a part of U. S. foreign policy. As long as our leaders and their families don't have to risk their lives or sacrifice anything, they love war---to hell with human lives, especially the opponent's.
     -- Dick, Fort Worth
Haig was never looking to win the Peace Prize

In this day and age, firing one nuclear weapon will probably lead to firing them all on both sides.
     -- Joe, Rochester, MI
Lets see... Reagan picked Haig... and King George W is made int he Reagan mold... hum... what does this tell us about the instability and insanity of KGW... I'm reminded of the commerical on depression, and the answer is "everything".
     -- Anonymous, Reston, VA US
Reston, you never cease to amaze me. No matter who is speaking, its GW's fault. You are at least consistent. Note this is a contingency plan for demonstration purposes...the idea is to say there is a limit to what will be allowed. I for one, think limits such as this are a good thing. Terrorists and libertines hate limits though--just one of a couple of things they have in common.
     -- RVW, USA
Of course, that was in the 80's -- the US attack on Iraq in retailiation for what the Saudis did to the World Trade Center and the Pentagon served a demonstrative purpose that the US will use any excuse to take over any nation for any cause.
     -- E Archer, NYC
What do we need another demonstration of a nuclear bomb for? Didn't we do that twice in 1945 at Hiroshima and Nagasaki?
     -- Jack, Green, OH
I hope there's a contigency plan for everything, this included. I'm sure there's one for nuking invading green Martians too.
     -- Ken, Allyn, WA
