"It will be asked whether one would care to have one's young daughter read these books. I suppose that by the time she is old enough to wish to read them she will have learned the biologic facts of life and the words that go with them. There is something seriously wrong at home if those facts have not been met and faced and sorted by then; it is not children so much as parents that should receive our concern about this. I should prefer that my own three daughters meet the facts of life and the literature of the world in my library than behind a neighbor's barn, for I can face the adversary there directly. If the young ladies are appalled by what they read, they can close the book at the bottom of page one; if they read further, they will learn what is in the world and in its people, and no parents who have been discerning with their children need fear the outcome. Nor can they hold it back, for life is a series of little battles and minor issues, and the burden of choice is on us all, every day, young and old. "

If I had young children, I sure wouldn't want them reading Cosmo or any of the trash in the grocery checkout line. However, I have little use for busybody groups like "The Womens Christian Temperance Union" who worked so hard to give us prohibition in 1920.

An open but discerning mind with the resilience to face the vagaries of life. My hope is that my daughters will never stop reading and questioning.

I'm not sure what, "books". these are (the case was about censoring sex). Keeping in mind and agreeing with the statements here above - the books here being referenced seem to be of a sexual nature? A person's mental development can be grossly distorted (forever changing the adult's psyche) from the how and when sex is introduced to a child/adolescent. Known and intended consequences of earlier and earlier sex education in the theocratic seminaries (government schools) is a condition of Stockholm Syndrom where the violated victim forever more attemps to justify the abuse of the abuser to only remain slavishly obiediet to the victim's master (in this case, the sexually abused children, from too early classroom instruction, become more and more subject to immorality and subserviant to government (the abuser).
