I've met too many "compassionate" liberals, some of whom bragged about being communists. While they held forth, all I could think of was, you're lucky to live in a country where you can criticize the government (at least for now) and not fear being executed tomorrow. My take is that he is stating an ideal, rather like our 19 century America, where there were no real taxes, people often gave "full tithe" to churches and charities if they could, up to 10% in many cases, and a totally different sort of safety net was in place, deficient as it was compared to today's. Of course we'll never see his idea situation, even to the Libertarian freedom he reflects on, but does not totally follow. His call for personal responsibililty instead of entitlement is laudible, but I fear as I see many at the bottom reflect on this as being their modus operandi due to corporate welfare at the top, both trapping the middle/working classes in peonage as we are suffering with more and more. Added to that, the creation of money must be taken out of private hands, as the primary mission statement of the Federal Reserve has been a total failure, "allowing" inflation of over 95% and threatened to become even worse with "QE" disease. Does anyone honestly believe that the most productive country by far in the history of the world is totally broke into the trillions and how many generations hence due to honest debt generation...and a system that earned that ;money to "loan" to the government first? It is all a lie, as this type of fiat money always has been since the middle ages. Money created as debt is a lie plain and simple, let alone that which is then "loaned" to our government. And if the interest, so important to be paid is mostly given back to the treasury as some claim, then why is it so important to be paid in the first place? The pat answer is that "we owe it to ourselves", a misleading and condescending platitude of the super-rich usury class we all suffer under. The 29,000 pages just "released" by the Fed should show at least some culpability in these directions, but I await expert comment to whit; my degree is in the wrong sector to ultimately matter much.  -- Dr. Tom LaMar, Keeseville, NY      2

Dr. Tom is right -- debt as money is a con -- the more of it you have, the more the debt there is!! Every dollar in your pocket is a dollar OWED -- imagine that -- Waffler, couldn't grasp this if he tried. Yes, Compassion is an integral component to a fruitful society -- but compassion is a personal responsibility, not one that we pawn off to our government. Once the Fed was created and money turned 'inside-out' (that is, currency instead of representing real capital with intrinsic value was issued as promises to pay -- IOUs) and an unlimited credit line was given to Congress, the only thing the government does is buy votes -- and funnel trillions to government contractors. The government never needs to turn a profit, and since there is no way for us to prevent them from borrowing more than can ever be repaid, we have allowed them to destroy our economy. And this is and has been the plan ever since the inception of the Federal Reserve. Fascism was rising rapidly in Europe, England, and the US, and we haven't gotten rid of it yet. Yes, we have fascism, and the socialists want communism -- anyone crying out for liberty is considered 'crazy.' What is crazy is the most free and prosperous country in the world is being brought to its knees because of the ignorance of its citizens and the concerted effort by the money masters to rule the world at the Americans' expense. It is not the corporations that are evil, it is the money system that allows them to create debt-as-money that we all have to accept then default and require us to 'bail them out.' Let them fall, and everyone who is tied to this system so that we can all finally realize who the enemy is and remember "never again" when we put right the wrongs. Yes, in evaluating this quote, what one might call a tirade. Its not a at substitutive, not at all coordinated, and sorry to say doesn't deliver one solid idea.
