"The whole subject of civilians carrying guns for self defense is discussed too much in the wrong places -- ACLU cocktail parties, gun club gatherings -- all placid atmospheres far removed from the terrifying reality of violent confrontation with the lawless. It should be discussed in prisons, where professional criminals are remarkably candid about their avoidance of armed citizens who can fight back. It should be discussed in rape crises centers. Ask a woman who has been raped, whether she ever wished she had a gun when it happened ... and whether she had bought one since. Her reply is likely to be “yes” to at least the first, and often to both. Talk to the bereaved who lost their loved ones to the streets. Talk to those who have been violated in their homes. Ask them how they feel about passive non-resistance. And when you have attuned yourself to the haunting fear that lives with them forever after their nightmare, you will be ready to talk with someone else who was in their place, but survived unscathed because they were armed. The contrast will be striking. These survivors don’t put notches on their pistols, and they don’t brag about what they had to do... The taking of a human life, no matter what the circumstances, is an unnatural act, an emotionally shattering experience that leaves its own scars forever. But none of those people regret what they did, and to a man, their first reaction was to go home to their wife and children and hug them, tightly and wordlessly."

Missed the most fundamental focus but excellent suggestion !

Buy your wife and daughters a pistol and teach them how to use it.

The conditions cited where the carrying of a wheapon and its (over) use is isolated. The conition has been contrived to justify the author's intention.
     -- L. Hanson, Edmonton, Canada
L Hanson, you aren't seriously suggesting that violent crime and the need for self defense don't exist, are you?

I pray I never need to use my gun. I also pray I never lose the right to own it.

... it should be discussed with the sources of illegal weapons, often stolen from homes and bought in states with lax laws such as VA... it should be discussed with the people whose children have died by their own hands with their parent's guns... it should be discussed with the parents of the innocent kids killed by overly nervous gun owners...
     -- Anonymous, Reston, VA, US
Hello Reston, it's good to get the hammer and sickle viewpoint. What does teen suicide have to do with anything and how many kids have been killed by overly nervous gun owners. Teen suicides are sad but if someone wants to kill themselves there are many ways to do this. The "overly nervous gun owner" thing is so preposterous as to need no comment. Little children sometimes drink Draino, by your reasoning should we ban drain cleaners. Read, assuming you can, the quote again and compare it to your nonsense.

Ayoob writes often in the Backwoods Country Home magazine. He is correct and the wrong place this subject is discussed mostly is web site.

Reston... Your willingness to be a victim, and to not exercise the personal responsibility necessary for the possession of a firearm, does not abrogate my God given rights.

Thank you Sonia for your demonstration of biased / bigoted / limited thinking....from a latin woman? :)

As a law abiding gun owner that carries a gun every single day, this is a message that I think more of us need to hear. @Anonymous, Reston, VA, US:: if more gun owners were educated on proper storage of firearms and more law abiding citizens would start exercising their right to carry a firearm, I think all of your points would go out the window...
     -- Scott, Reno, NV
If every one carried a gun I would expect that innocent victims of gun violence would decrease in spite of the increased availability.
     -- warren, olathe
I knew a Jew who was for gun confiscation, it was beyond my comprehension. What will you do when the jack-booted thugs come for you? I asked. He must have thought hard about it because a few weeks later he asked where to shop for an economical 12 gauge. I also cannot comprehend how any descendent of slaves could be against gun ownership. If you have family to protect, not having a gun and training makes you derelict in your duty. If guns are evil, why do we give them to the police?
