"If all were to share alike, and all were to do alike, then all were on an equality throughout, and one was as good as another; and so, if it did not actually abolish those very relations which God himself has set among men, it did at least greatly diminish the mutual respect that is so important should be preserved amongst them. Let none argue that this is due to human failing, rather than to this communistic plan of life in itself...."

Reader comments about this quote:
Yes, the Plymouth Colony was originally organized with communistic ideals. The plan failed miserably, which Bradford documents further in his letters. Once the plan was scrapped, people started managing themselves and prospered as a community more than under the communistic plan.

False. The market was not available for the Pilgrims in the US, extreme measures to create one was used with super entrepeneurship in bringing order out of chaos. A full ship of goods was loaded that first summer sent back to England to pay their debts. Bradfords comments come after the market was established past the scurvey they had that caused them to pull together which is natural. It never was communism as Marx saying to take an established market from entrepeneurs by labor Entrepenuers are exceptional and succesful economies depends on them. In the market economy and they use anthropology as a means to an end outside what is considered normal. Read Mises Human Action and the phenomena of entrepeunership.

Sorry, I do not understand what you are talking about.  Bradford himself used the word 'communistic'  nothing about Marx or markets or Mises.  The point was more along the lines of Adam Smith:

"It is not the benevolence of the butcher, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest. We address ourselves, not to their humanity but to their self-love, and never talk to them of our own necessities but of their advantages."

This Mr Bradford is a product of his time. He was a believer in "god given inheritance."   We are, in contrary fact, a product of our environment and the environment becomes ever more conducive to making us understand that we are quite similar in value as we appreciate each other's various diversities. We find, in the finality that all of our various rational abilities are in essential need and equally respectful. And as President Kennedy said for those who believe that Communism is the wave of future, eat your jelly donut, in German. I respond I'll take my vegan donut and Communism. I believe Communism is the future.

Thanks for your honesty, Fred.  It puts all your confusing posts in perspective because they have nothing to do with respecting the rights of others or preserving their liberty.  At least you can admit that to be 'The Socialist' is to believe in communism.

Sadly, to wish for communism is to wish for the bloodshed of the common man who asks nothing from you but from whom you claim everything.  You are but a wolf in sheep's clothing.  Should the day ever come that Americans will be forced to face communism head on, be prepared to face 100 million armed patriots that are willing to defend their liberty with their lives against you.

You are the worst sort of American, even the worst sort of human being, who is ungrateful for this Life and would rather see everyone inferior to you that will not follow your communistic ways either dead or bound.  We see you, even if you do not.  You have been deceived, and as you sow, so shall you reap.

Mr Archer, It is your mental illness that does not recognize my character as the only true American patriot in thought, words, and practice. I am the only authentic practicing American who in fact practices commitment, devotion, loyalty, integration, equality,  nonviolence, and justice in regard to the American cause. Without my sole personal efforts there would never be a true American realization, but  the American dream will be realized. President Kennedy,  Martin Luther King, deserved a decent and fair trial, not your gangland murder "justice."

Mr Archer, I did sow, and so shall I reap, indeed, you better believe it. Under my direction this laughing stock of nation, before that direction, has become the world leader in creativity and productivity. It is no longer the playground joke of the world, your direction Mr Archer, but a respected hub of moral direction and guidance as I have directed and dreamed. Welcome to civilization.
