"The only part of the conduct of anyone for which he is amenable to society is that which concerns others. In the part which merely concerns himself, his independence is, of right, absolute. Over himself, over his own body and mind, the individual is sovereign."

Rugged individualism, hurray! Just don't take away my insurance (that most socialistic of all inventions of man).

Another great Liberal - his thinking, like so many before and after him, is the mark of true Liberalism - the first sentence is the key to a civilized world.

As long as the concept remains "amenable", not escalating to 'mandatory'.

It is reflexive for any truly sovereign Sovereign Individual, he or she whose personal sovereignty is necessarily predicated upon the ennobling presence of Virtue, to be mindful of the rights and sensibilities of his or her fellows.

It is this Virtue illumined mindfulness that constitutes the essence of civilization.

Claiming independence, absolute right(s), individualism or sovereignty over your own body and mind  not conflicting with an other person's independence, absolute right(s), individualism or sovereignty (not the State) will probably get you locked up today. Today, acting as a non-helot / serf / slave to the occupying statist theocracy infesting this land is a criminal offense.

Robert, you know darn well that this is no longer considered 'liberalism' today.  The 'my body my choice' liberals are selective in how that applies  just because it is your body doesn't mean you can do anything you choose without regard for other people's bodies and rights.  'Pride' events come to mind  why must we have people's sexual proclivities shoved in our faces for a month (and more).  It used to be a crime to expose yourself in public, now it is common practice and embraced by 'liberals.'  We've come a long way, baby.
