Now people as we know can choose church, private or home schooling. But educate they must only because it is the law. Unions for government employees are a scam and an absolute conflict of interest as the government is not a for-profit business. Three of five top donors to Obama's campaign were public service employee unions (and of course Goldman Sachs was #1). That means that the government pays its employees, the employees pay the unions to keep their jobs (and even just to get the job), and the unions pay the Democrats to keep the racket going. More money for 'education,' means more money for the Democrats. There is no incentive to make government education more efficient as it has to be in the private sector. As a home-schooling parent, I pay musicians to teach my children music, and we pay online teachers to coach our children through subjects like literature and history. I prefer to pay the teachers directly -- why should they have to give a percentage to someone else? No one has to choose the public school. The only compulsion in most states is that children be educated. Mary, I did not read the word government in the quote. Could it be you are some how preconditioned or programmed to read words that are not there? I lived in a State (for about a year) where home-school parents had to be certified the same as theocratic seminary (government schools) propagators and the curriculum had to be identical. I couldn't even teach my children from the bible during school hours in my own home. If a parent veered from the set teachings it fell under child abuse. It didn't matter that my home-schooled children were so far ahead of the dumbed down students of the theocratic seminaries that college was commenced at age 14. I was turned into the State by a neighbor theocratic seminary teacher. Shortly after leaving that State I had a child competing in sports at an Olympic level. I would not be willing to entrust my children to theocratic seminaries, even under threat and duress.  -- Mike, Norwalk      3
State education should provide a high but minimum standard of education for all children who are not the sons and daughters of people wealthy enough to privately educate them or are in the position to home school them. Education and the protection of children is a national concern as all mothers and fathers are not responsible parents - sadly they are often irresponsible and abusive. Good state education where there is adequate funding and leadership is often the salvation of children who are the ones at risk of extortion and exploitation - not the parents.  -- Mick, Manchester      2

Archer, (-; just a thought on the subject. If the de jure State's united were in fact a representative republic where "We The People" (individual sovereigns united) hired servants from amongst ourselves — those that would instruct our noble youth in math, science, history, reading / writing and that secular subject matter that would advance the individual (and subsequent society — religion be taught at home and elsewhere), wouldn't those publicly employed that joined unions be fighting against themselves? It seems to me that if you are in fact an individual sovereign and join a union, an illogical schizophrenia rules the day with you arguing with yourself on how much will pay yourself and what you will teach / and how. 'Education' has become yet another profitable racket.  I can read 100 books and write the equivalent of one or more on my own OR I can pay 50-100K / year to have someone compel me to do so — and borrow the money to boot.  Better I spend 4 years getting practical experience in a productive field, not a parasitic one.  Trade schools deliver more.   A Bachelor's Degree has been reduced in quality but increased in fluff.  They have dumbed down what used to be 'higher education.'  The latest Supreme Court justice is prime example — why didn't any one ask her if she was qualified to answer whether she was a woman or needed a biologist.  The inmates are indeed running the asylum. Public school has always been a labor racket.  To get women out of the home and into the work force, to employ millions of government servants (overwhelming majority are Democrats), to indoctrinate children — it is a communist plank, American-style — only you have to pay more than an indentured servant for the privilege.  The 'doctors' are monopolists in the fields of the 'law' and 'medicine' — the 'authorities.'  And you will pay through the nose before you get a chance to get in the game.
