"As part of the conversation with student leaders, we talked about the concept of Zero Tolerance. While I appreciate the desire for such a policy, it is unachievable under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The challenge we all face is to find the balance between wanting to eliminate expressions of racism and bigotry and supporting the free speech guaranteed by the First Amendment. If we value freedom of speech, we must acknowledge that some may find the expressions of others unwelcome, painful, or even, offensive. We can, however, speak out and condemn such expressions, and we can work to create a more welcoming and inclusive environment."

Reader comments about this quote:
The overall sentiment, that of an "inclusive environment" for free speech is a seeming good and lawful expression (an intended to be misleading or distracting red herring). It is the whole - holier than thou - judges of condemnation that overshadows any noble intent. The Constitution is here used as an inhibition against the greater good - appreciated desire for Zero Tolerance instead of a limitation on a servant body politic. The entire quote is nothing more than a beginning argument and work book on how to shut down speech that is contrary to certain personal and religious sensitivities.

At least there is some university president willing to address student demands for censorship. College sure has changed since I attended many decades ago. How has it gotten turned around? As Mike has alluded, Kennedy makes a poor argument for freedom of speech .
