he must be able to look any man in the eye
and tell him to go to hell is the very essence
of the free man's way of life."

I wonder sometimes whether it's not the "FADING American's conviction", what with the emphasis on NOT giving offence in, or in relation to, sacrosanct topics or venues. How comfortable would you be in saying to the clergy of ANY religion, or the Girl Scouts, 'Go to hell'? We're more likely to rely on the old and wise saw; 'Discretion is the better part of valor.' I'd put forth that the liberty to chose between strategies "is the very essence of the free man's way of life."

Being politically correct by never giving 'offense' should be offensive to every American. Nowhere in the Constitution does it state your right to NOT be offended. PC is BS designed to increase control over people, and the government responds by legislating redundant laws such as 'hate crimes'. Is it MORE illegal to murder someone if they are a homosexual? Of course not, but it does provide an excuse, and transfer personal responsibility from the murderer to society at large.
