Reader comments about this quote:
Lacking and somewhat out of character for a more exhaustive body of works and words offered by the man; or at least, this was directed at a specific scenario. He said so much more with greater depth of accuracy. Legitimate and good government, by way of object, does not necessarily focus on the person but rather, the individual sovereign's inalienable rights. People and their needs vary, inalienable rights do not.

Caregivers should never take for granted or loose sight of the object that good is. Otherwise one becomes an oppressive tyrant ! Social engineering has created a race of cut-throats, that prey upon one another. Rather than to help and promote true neighborly respect of the other persons right to life and happiness. So many it seems have fallen into the trap of hate and distrust. A sad day for all, when blind greed and jealousy rule the heart of man.

I understand Mike's criticism -- perhaps the quote in context would clarify. I do not think Jefferson's use of the word 'care' here implies the State trumps the individual, although that could be today's interpretation.
