for authority can rarely survive in the face of doubt."

...unless it abolishes the First and Second amendments. But there is little chance of that. Oh - I was forgetting that Bill Clinton wants to be the next UN secretary general. You know, the same Bill Clinton who stated to the press that Americans have too much freedom, and that they should be more restricted. (Don't believe me...you can find it in the articles of mainstream magazines.) The same Bill Clinton whose servants violated the Fourth Amendment in more than one case, with devastating consequences. (Read.) Bill Clinton, who wants to lead the UN effort to have the US fall under the authority of the UN International Court, the same UN on whose Human Rights Commission sit such illustrious genocidal regimes as that of Red China and CastroCuba. The same UN that wants you all to worship Gaia, give up your guns, and fall in step with the New World Disorder. Authoritative regimes survive quite well in the face of doubt, opposition, rebellion, and civil war. They do not go away easily.

and yet, dispite King George having done more to gut the 1st & 4th amendments, and his minions to make a complete mockery of the 2nd amendment... we see that slowly the people are realizing his insanity, and thus his authority is slowly (and thankfully) slipping away...

If more people were skeptical of Bill Clinton, King George, their motives, policies, and actions, along with the rest of the maniacal dictator types, their authority would diminish. In fact, the greater the skepticism of man's established authority (the representative having become the master), the greater the chance of establishing liberty, detecting tyranny, and opportunity to find the truth about planes crashing into skyscrapers.

How can we ever improve and advance ourselves if we don't criticize and question our government?

What authority? What skeptic? It appears this fellow is sadly no longer with us. All the same, you existing quote players need specifics, instead of just throwing rubbish out there. Your effort would be more appropriate and appreciated if you would just stop the childish playing and believe in something profoundly real.
