"Illusions are like mistresses.
We can have many of them
without tying ourselves down to responsibility.
But truth insists on marriage.
Once a person embraces truth,
he is in its ruthless, but gentle, grasp."

As they say in the hood, "Get real man get real". We will be in the grasp of climate change whether or not we embrace its truth. If we embrace its truth we may be able to escape some of its wrath. We choose and hold on to the illusions that are convenient to our short term happiness rather than to those inconvenient truths that are vital to our long term happiness and to the happiness of those who will be born 100 years from now.

    We have been in the grasp of climate change for as long as there has been a climate. Get ready for the coming ice age. Oh, wait! Is it warming now? Cooling is so 1970's. No, wait! The global temperature has been going down since 1998. So, that means the earth is cooling, right? Nooooo....that means the earth is warming but in an especially dangerous way. It's not illusions that we have to worry about, it's the delusions and raving lunacy of leftists.

    Truth will force itself upon you eventually. It cannot be denied forever. It's grasp will not always be gentle either. It will grab you, give you a slap in the face that is just hard enough to wake you up. Some people just need a good, hard slap.

    Ken am I to assume that you believe that river polution and acid rain were inevitable? And thus carbon dioxide "pollution" is not pollution at all but an inevitable natural occurrence? May I assume that you believe that the earth is not affected by the flora and fauna that exist upon it. Is it not affected by the human beings that exist on it? (Are not human beings part of the fauna?}

    I like it. I sure wish the discussions about these quotes about 'truth' wouldn't have to devolve into political battles about 'climate change.' There is nothing more variable than weather -- I would hardly call it 'truth.' The point is whether people know how to be honest with themselves enough that they can fairly discern the difference between political agendas and honest research. Taxes will NEVER change the weather -- quite frankly I find it disturbing that concentrating more and more power/money/control into the hands of politicians is the 'solution' to whatever hobgoblin is being touted around today. I suppose plate tectonics are next on the list ("we have to stop this continental drift thing -- it is causing too many earthquakes and volcanoes"). There are many more pressing issues of deceit to address than 'global warming' which most expert meteorologists and cosmologists have proved are due to cycles of the SUN. If the seas are rising at a couple inches a year, then haven't we been given enough warning to move to higher ground? No, we must stop the seas, change the weather and raise taxes to accomplish it. LOL, how stupid can we be.

    As a matter of fact, Waffler, acid rain is inevitable. Volcanic activity spews out many times the amount of sulfer dioxide than man does. Polluted water in many places in the world are inevitable. For example, in Bangladesh the occurrence of cancerous tumors caused by arsenic is much higher than almost any other place in the world. The arsenic occurs naturally in Bangladeshi groundwater (as it does in some places in the American southwest by the way). It is just luck of the draw and they drew poorly. The world is full of naturally occurring pollutants. Should we take a dump in our own cornflake bowl? Of course not, but carbon dioxide is not a pollutant. It is part of the natural carbon cycle that means life on earth. That carbon in the ground came from somewhere and that somewhere is organic. Perhaps a few hundred ppm more of carbon dioxide would turn the world into a lush, tropical paradise, perfect for my retirement years. More likely though, it would have very little effect at all since the data show that increase in carbon dioxide follows increase in temperature. It is an indicator of temperature increase that has already happened because of variations in the big ball of fire in the sky called the Sun.

    So Ken you reject the idea of having any regret over the Ohio River that caught on fire, and you just consider that okay? You show some remorse with the cornflake argument. You have some redeeming qualities or at the least an opening towards gaining some redeeming qualities. You know very well that acid rain from industry and volcanos are two different things, I think your sincerity was slipping there.

    Sulfuric acid is sulfuric acid, no matter where it comes from. Man can absolutely affect environment on a local scale. That's why I use my flush toilet and not an outhouse. Globally, man is like a flea on a dog. We may cause it a little discomfort but we're not going to kill it. It's always best not to have an irritated dog around though.

    We have killed whole eco systems so why shouldn't Earth be next? We started this process over 3000 years ago with Aruk etc, etc. One blessing is that we may kill earth before we kill other planets

    It is a matter of sensitivity. The environmentalist like the dog is sensitive to these issues and knows that from one flea an entire infestation will occur. Lady Bird Johnson said it all when she said, "Miles of trash from little eyesores grow." And was it B. Franklin who said "Take care of the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves." I think these sentiments are the ones that we should live by as far as environment.
