"Let's be clear: the work of science has nothing whatever to do with consensus. Consensus is the business of politics. Science, on the contrary, requires only one investigator who happens to be right, which means that he or she has results that are verifiable by reference to the real world. In science consensus is irrelevant. What is relevant is reproducible results. The greatest scientists in history are great precisely because they broke with the consensus."

Reader comments about this quote:
An inconvenient truth to those for whom the "science is settled." Voting can never impose truth. We can all agree on an ideal or direction, but it doesn't make it 'right' just because we all agree or disagree. Science is a continuous dialogue of propositions, theory, observations, with an intention to reveal the truth. Scientists never stop asking questions -- with an infinite universe, there is no shortage. Politics arises when scientific discoveries threaten Church or State, which depend on the weaknesses of the people. Any 'truth' that empowers or liberates putting power back into the hands of the individual can cause the establishment power structure to collapse -- once the cat is out of the bag, there's no getting it back in.

As Yogi said, It ain't over til the fat lady sings. It doesn't matter what the consensus is (what causes weather change, is or is not there a God, etc.) - it "is" what it "is".
