"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality,
tied in a single garment of destiny.
Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."

Those who are being oppressed know this better than the oppressors.

Yes, MLK was a wonderful individual - he could of converted me but alas I did not know him so I remain an Atheist; Buddha is still my way, along which I find peace. Much of his world was taken up with Vedic traditions and those date 2000 BC i interesting enough one of the Vedic prays is "behave towards others as you would behave unto yourself"

Robert: Oh, so you agree that you should "behave towards others as you would behave unto yourself." That's half the battle. Now, if you would just believe in God, you might have a chance. I was an atheist, but thankfully I am no longer as ignorant as I was.

Behave towards others as they would have you behave towards them... think about it, it is very ego centric to assume that they want the same thing that you want... honor them with what they really want, not what you want!

That's odd, David. I was once a Christian, but thankfully, I am no longer as ignorant as I was either, so now I'm an atheist too. And Reston, what's wrong with treating others as you would treat yourself? It's better than treating them as you wouldn't even treat yourself. If everyone did that it would be a better world, but, of course, if you choose not to treat others that way, then don't. It's your privilege.

You claim to be an atheist, but I bet that you are not.

I claim you're not a Christian, David. Shall we compare if I'm a better atheist than you are a Christian? I do not believe in a suprreme being, at least not the kind described by most religions, and I don't believe in salvation or an eternal soul, or any of the dogma of religion, so what does that make me?

You do not have to believe in a supreme being described by anyone to be a believer in God. And from your description of yourself, you seem not to be an atheist. I think you are a role model, almost.

Treat others as you would expect to be treated. Unless you are a masochist.

;-) Funny, jim k! I can see that as a footnote in the Bible - "Do unto others as you would have done unto you." (1) Unless you are a masochist. ;-)

I think treating people how you would like to be treated, and allowing others to do the same is the essence of association.  It is the beginning, not the end.  Twisting the quote into "Treat people they way they want to be treated" sounds nice except what if the person wants to be treated as the boss of everyone else?  What if they want my property or labors?  What if their wants are unattainable?  Do they have a right to my obedience?

The pursuit of happiness is personal.  I cannot fulfill another's purpose in life.  Interesting that the people who do agree with such sentiments want to regulate everyone else's behavior.

    Talk about ego-centric!
