"If the previous paragraphs [of 'A Religion For A New Age'] prove anything, it is that the Bible is not merely another book, an outmoded and archaic book, or even an extremely influential book; it has been and remains an incredibly dangerous book. It and the various Christian churches which are parasitic upon it have been directly responsible for most of the wars, persecutions and outrages which humankind has perpetrated upon itself over the past two thousand years."

Mr. Dunphy, like most of the "Christians" of whom he speaks, misses the point -- what "Christianity" really is. This is typical of most so-called humanists. Unfortunately, it's also true of most so-called Christians. Even I am a humanist (even have some human blood coursing through my veins), but "humanism" must not be confused with religion. What Mr. Dunphy probably calls "nature," I think of an attribute of what Socrates (through Plato) called God. ("God is Truth, and Light His Shadow") What is Christianity? Really? It is manifest in what Jesus (and many other sages) taught. Compassion, forgiveness, love thy neighbor (even thine enemy!), and do unto others as you would be done by.

William. You are confusing Christianity with what Jesus taught. If you know anything at all about history you will understand that Christain churches have seldom practiced compassion, forgiveness or loving their neighbors. It is only what they claim to believe... not what they actually do.

Dear mr humpty/dunphy, I am always in awe of the level of bitterness individuals have towards christianity. This is generally played out on the battlefield of wars and the frequency of those wholly attributed to the church. He fails to reconise the facts of who instigated the first ; Hospitals, schools, universitys, orphanages refuges ,welfare agencies and believe me the list goes on and on . All we can do is pray that mr dunphey has the same encounter the apostle paul had on the way to Damascus.Although the lord did see that Paul had something to offer in his giftings.

    1. Mr. Dunphy ignores the facts. I could show in the Koran where Muslims are told to kill infidels (their jihad is obvious today) ,how real Christians who followed the Bible brought peace and freedom to America (not taught in public schools), or further prove this quote to be wrong; but people will not listen because they have been decieved by Satan. Human reasoning is Satan's way of dragging people to hell with him. Believing any lie will not change truth. 2. The anonymous quote above is sadly true - many Christians have a rotton testimony because they also believe in God but they do not believe God. 3. True Christians are those who believe that every person has a sin nature and God is holy and must judge sin(any transgression against God's laws), that Jesus Christ took the punishment for every person's sin by His death on the cross, and every person who repents of their sin and accepts Christ as their personal Savior will live with God in Heaven for eternity. Believing in human theories about the origin of life or anything else that seeks to discredit the Bible is no excuse to reject God.

Ah, I had such passion as a 28-year-old. Decades later, I've learned to appreciate those passages in the Bible that can be used to bolster the case for social justice. The Old and New Testaments contain a plethora of verses that can be employed for a variety of purposes. Conservatives and fundamentalists find much to like, as do liberals and religious humanists. The Bible is a unique resource that can -- and should - be utilized by those of us who value compassion and empathy.
