    It appears Mr. Lovecraft can not make up his mind. ie: refer to previus quote. I believe the most Merci-less thing in the world is the refusal or inability to Forgive.

    The quote is incorrect. It should say "merciful", not "merciless". In the context of the story from which it comes, he's saying that ignorance is healthier than some knowledge.
