I'm not all that politically perceptive, nor was I in his day, but my impression was that he was liberal ( maybe not so liberal as today's ) so these words brought me up short: McCarthy said [big government] is inefficient ?

Stating the obvious. By a very liberal Catholic. I'm glad he never received the Presidency.

It's not inefficient enough for me !! Notice that the government shut down for the most part didn't really do anything -- so they had to make the most public of services stop like 'park services' (which is mostly the protection of federal land grabs). Government shutdown is supposed to be the stopping of spending -- every one that was furloughed still received their back pay. Government employees now number in the millions and their primary purpose is to keep their paychecks coming in whether their service is even needed at all. God forbid they ever get very efficient at all, because their oppression will be much more complete.
