"Our ancestors established their system
of government on morality and religious sentiment.
Moral habits, they believed, cannot safely be trusted
on any other foundation than religious principle,
not any government secure which is not supported by moral habits....
Whatever makes men good Christians, makes them good citizens."

Daniel Webster

Too bad there are so few professed Christians today who can be considered "good Christians"... there is too much hate taught as if it is Christianity for these folks to claim any moral high-ground in their religion.

If you can rid your religion of the fundamentalists, but be vocal and critical of that dangerous group, then I'll stand by.

I think the distinction Webster is making is that government is supported by the honor and virtue of the People -- particularly the principles of Christianity -- love, forgiveness, honesty, tolerance, courage, and peace. That is not to say that mankind has ever achieved such high ideals -- millions and millions of people have been killed in the name of religion. However, hypocrisy is not confined to religionists alone -- secularlists can be just as fundamentalist and closed-minded as those they condemn. Arrogance and intolerance are poor substitutes for the 'christian' virtues of kindness, understanding, and respect for others -- indispensible supports for a nation that wishes to be free and self-governing.

Far too often the gospel of Jesus Christ is blamed for the evil that 'christians' do. But any careful reading of the Bible should demonstrate that such evil is not authored by our God of love, charity and peace but by evil men who defend their actions as being His will when they are no such thing.

Amen BondiHarry! Besides, a good Christian doesn't exist. We arn't Christians, we are sinners saved by God's grace. The first Christians didn't call themselves by that name, it was a title given them by outsiders to the faith who saw their works, knew they followed Jesus, and thus called them Christians (Christ followers). A lack of humility and fear of God is what America has. And our God is an Everlasting God, he can outdo a simple 200 year old nation, despite all the nukes and all the money and all the "liberty" we have. To God be the Glory, for great things he hath done.
