"Depressed? Of course we're all depressed. We've been so quickly, violently, and irreconcilably plucked from nature, from physical labor, from kinship and village mentality, from every natural and primordial anti-depressant. The further society "progresses," the grander the scale of imbalance. Just as fluoride is put in water to prevent dental caries, we'll soon find government mandating Prozac in our water to prevent mental caries."

A star for humour. But no one is forced. You can be physical, you can toss the TV, the lawn mower, the central heat, live in a cabin, etc. Toss out the trappings of modern life if you choose. Americans have chosen the lives they lead through free chosen, the invisible hand of Adam Smith. If we have been plucked it has been by that invisible hand which most people at admire.

Waff, your sentence structure leads me to believe that you were "educated" in public schools. Perhaps you meant "free choice" not "free chosen". "Most people at admire",what on earth does that mean? I think that you could use an editor.

The societal "progress" depriving us of our connection with nature, labor, and kinship in American is the governmental theft of our time. The money taken from us and wasted by government is nothing more than the time that we purposefully saved for living our lives. Man was not meant to live as a depressed socialist automaton, working four months of the year for other's gain. Depression is born from repeated unhappiness through theft without end.

I've always said that we should end all federal mandates on the states. Let the people choose for themselves.

We are lving in a delusionary world. Free from personal responsibility but liable for the care of the state, we are institutionalized by church and state from the nursery to the nursing home. The lifeblood sucked from us non-stop, not enough to kill us outright, but enough to build the empires of a few from the life force of billions. Even children know something is wrong, very wrong, but can't tell what it is. Freedom then just becomes a state of mind -- the prisoners learn to love their prison, to fear the 'real' world, to leave the important decisions to the 'authorities.' Those that have thrown out the TV and started to grow food in their own yard, pump their own water, and generate their own power find that they need permission to do so. It turns out that in 'reality' they are not owners of their own land, or even their own bodies. They must pay fines and fees for simply living as their great-grand-fathers had lived and prospered. Born into a world in which is placed upon their newborn heads a lifetime of debt to repay, counted and numbered, stamped and stuck with needles with concoctions later identified as toxic and poisonous, then strapped to a desk for the next 12 years and more, then transferred to other facilities for another 50 years, then if you are still alive, you may 'retire' for a few years before being transferred to a nursing home. What a great life! And day in, day out, we are told that this is progress. Yeah, it is progress alright, progressive servitude, raising us to be cowards, and good little obedient slaves. Yes, the truth is depressing! That's why most avoid it -- just pass me another beer and turn on the game... some life, eh?

The natural ways are old ways. Good ways. Loose the education and you create lost people not knowing how to return to their own farm or natural way of life. But for some it is too much work. Addiction to an unsustainable way of life. But who cares about posterity. Remove the ability to feed oneself from the land. Read again Washington's farewell address. And the warnings he made. Don't go to work for the government, they make a living off of the laborers back. We need another Jackson as president and a military to back him. Tar and feathers for special interest and the current administration.

On the other hand a natural life may not be the utopia many people expect; physical labor means 16 hours a day in a coal mine, and the kinship and village mentality mean just another crowded slum, with lives that are "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short."

I think the fluoride in our water prevents us from seeing that the correct cord should be "Cavities". Good quote. Poor attention to detail.

Otto...just an FYI: Fluoride is a by product of manufacturing Aluminum. It is also a slow poison.
If people want to ingest it that's fine if they "choose" to do so. However, to have it put in the public water supply is more than irresponsible, it's criminal and it sets the precedent that Big Brother knows what's best for all us stupid peons.

Do you ever thought that it actually takes some money today to be able to do that choice? To have a cabin in "the woods"? You know you can't get land any more for free, right? Or maybe you just prefer to ignore this?

why would people living natural lives need to labor in COAL mines? Do you those are working for civilization, right?
God whats happening with these posts today. Think a little before writing.

that quote is from Hobbes, I wager you know that. Might you also know that Hobbes never saw any human in that condition, but only theorized about the past, without much in which to base itself on? His time was the renascence, he was just extrapolating the horrors of the middle ages (in his eyes) to what all the past before his "glorious" state would be. Never met a tribe, never did one archeological study. Since we as a civilization latter have done those, we have learned that his visions were REALLY off the mark.

'Dental caries' is tooth decay due to bacteria, cavities are the result.  The details are correct.
